Grah Pravesh Puja, also known as Housewarming Ceremony, is a traditional Hindu ritual performed to bless a new home or dwelling before the inhabitants move in. It is believed to purify the space, remove any negative energies, and invite positive vibrations for prosperity, happiness, and well-being in the new home.
Selection of Auspicious Date and Time: The ceremony is typically scheduled on an auspicious day and time, as per the Hindu calendar, which is determined by factors such as the alignment of stars and planetary positions.
Preparation of the Home: Before the puja, the house is thoroughly cleaned and decorated with rangoli (colorful patterns made with powdered dyes), flowers, mango leaves, and other auspicious decorations.
Ganesh Puja: The ceremony usually begins with a prayer to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, to seek his blessings for the successful completion of the Grah Pravesh Puja and to remove any obstacles that may hinder the family’s happiness in the new home.
Kalash Sthapana: A copper or silver kalash (pot) filled with water, adorned with mango leaves, and a coconut on top is established at the entrance of the home as a symbol of prosperity and abundance.
Havan (Fire Ritual): A sacred fire (havan) is lit in the home, and offerings such as ghee, grains, herbs, and incense are made into the fire while reciting Vedic mantras. The fire is believed to purify the atmosphere and create a positive energy flow in the house.
Griha Pravesh Ritual: The homeowner(s) and family members are guided through the entrance of the home by the priest or elder family member, carrying a lighted lamp, a vessel of water, and offerings of grains and flowers. This symbolic entry represents the official start of their residency in the new home.
Pujas to Deities: Various pujas may be conducted to invoke the blessings of specific deities such as Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Saraswati (goddess of knowledge), and Vishnu (preserver of the universe) for prosperity, wisdom, and protection in the new home.
